What Is an Independent Dental Hygiene Clinic? (And What to Expect at Your First Visit)

If you've only ever had your teeth cleaned at a dentist's office, the idea of a hygiene-only clinic might be new to you. You're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get.

The short answer: an independent dental hygiene clinic is owned and run by Registered Dental Hygienists. We focus on one thing, keeping your teeth and gums healthy, and we give that one thing our full attention.

Here's what that means for you, and what your first visit with us looks like.

How is it different from a dental office?

At most dental offices, your hygienist works within a busy schedule built around the dentist. Appointments can feel tight. You might be moved between rooms, or rushed through so the next patient can be seated.

At an independent clinic, the hygienist is the one setting the pace. That usually means:

  • More time with you. Your appointment isn't squeezed between other procedures.

  • One person, start to finish. You see the same hygienist for your whole visit.

  • A focus on prevention. Our job is to catch small things early and help you avoid bigger problems later.

In Alberta, Registered Dental Hygienists can practise independently. That means you can book with us directly, no referral from a dentist needed.

Do I still need a dentist?

Yes, and we'll be the first to say so. Hygienists and dentists do different jobs. We clean, assess and care for your teeth and gums. Dentists diagnose and treat things like cavities, cracked teeth and anything that needs a filling or crown.

If we spot something that needs a dentist's attention, we'll tell you clearly and help you find the right next step. If you already have a dentist, we're happy to share your records with them.

What happens at your first visit

Your first appointment is mostly about getting to know you and your mouth. Here's roughly how it goes:

  1. A quick chat. We'll go over your health history and ask how you're feeling about your teeth. If you're nervous, tell us. We'll go at your pace.

  2. A full look. We check your teeth and gums, measure gum health and look for anything that needs watching.

  3. Your cleaning. We gently remove plaque and tartar buildup, then polish your teeth.

  4. A plan that fits you. We'll talk through what we saw, answer your questions, and suggest when to come back.

No lectures, and no judgment. Whether it's been six months or six years since your last cleaning, you're welcome here.

What should I bring?

  • Your dental insurance details, if you have coverage

  • A list of any medications you take

  • Any recent x-rays from another office, if you have them handy

  • Questions! There's time to ask them.

Why we built The Hygiene Suite

We're Kathleen and Charles, a husband-and-wife team of Registered Dental Hygienists. We opened The Hygiene Suite in Calgary's West District because we wanted appointments to feel calm and personal again: a space where you can sit back, relax and actually enjoy taking care of your smile.

If that sounds like what you've been looking for, we'd love to meet you. Join our waitlist and be the first to know when we open our doors.
